So, if you have been following me on social media you already know I was a part of The Black Upstart Bootcamp. It teaches aspiring black entrepreneurs how to start a successful and profitable business through an intense, culturally-relevant six-day Bootcamp. This was really a game changer for me because for about a year I wondered how I could stand out from the already saturated clothing and fashion industry. Yes, I make custom clothing but that's honestly not good enough. When consumers are shopping for clothes they don't really care who made the clothing or if it was handmade. This bootcamp helped me think outside the box! Rhonda Lynette isn't just a clothing brand, it's now a LUXURY AFFORDABLE CLOTHING BRAND THAT CATERS TO TALL WOMEN.
I'm 5'9" and sometimes it's hard for me to find jeans that are long enough, when it comes to my tops I usually have to pull on my sleeves to pull them down and even when it comes to skinny jeans it's a struggling getting my big feet out the jeans. So, if I'm having problems finding clothes that fits me correctly then I know it's hard for women who are 6 feet or taller. Tall women are a specialty niche in the clothing industry. A lot of brands, online stores, brick and mortar stores don't cater to tall women. You will see a plus size section and even a petite section, but never a tall section for women. It's frustrating because a lot of us tall women feel like the clothing industry overlooks us.
In the U.S its about 4.2 million adult (age 20 and up) women who are 5'9" and taller. I want to focus of this group of women because we ALL struggle from the same thing, FINDING CLOTHING THAT FITS US PROPERLY. My goal is to make every tall woman feel comfortable, beautiful and confident in what they wear.
Patterns are typically generated for the average height of women who are 5'4". It's a few brands such as Gap, Old Navy, J.Crew, and Land's End who have a small variety of clothing catered to tall women but it's like a scavenger hunt when you go in store to find them. But overall, these brands don't go back to the drawing board. To get a perfect and comfortable fit you must design patterns specifically for tall women such as extending the shoulder widths, lengthening the inseams with knee correctly positioned, longer arm lengths with the elbow correctly positioned, adjusted necklines, larger pockets to accommodate larger hands, hem openings extended to accommodate larger feet, etc. The few brands that have a small selection of clothing for tall women, they only lengthen the clothes they don't take the time to re-design the patterns.
Like I mentioned above, I'm going back to the drawing board and making every pattern specifically for tall women. Because it's not a lot of selection out there, I'm free to be as creative as I want. As a go-to- designer I want to provide tall women with a variety of styles, comfort, affordability, great fit, design, and quality. My goal is to not only have an online boutique for tall women but, to go out and get into brick and mortar boutiques then venture out and getting my brand into off- price retailers such as Nordstrom Rack and Neiman Marcus Last Call. For me to get into stores like that I must start by doing pop up shops at boutiques that are in a high traffic area. This will help get my name and brand out there. I will also have the option to wholesale to boutiques. This will be beneficial because they too lack tall clothing for women.
I want my beautiful tall customers to have an option of shopping online and in person at a local shop. Keeping jobs in America is also important to me. I will continue to buy my high-quality fabrics here in the U, S. and once I get my clothing manufactured it will be here as well. This specialty niche is near and dear to me because I'm literally apart of this niche.
I know some people may not understand why I'm doing this or why I'm limiting myself to such a small niche. When you look at Christian Louboutin, when he started out he didn't just create designer footwear. He created the RED BOTTOM footwear. His name and brand stood out from the rest of the designers and companies that makes shoes. I want to do just that, I want Rhonda Lynette to be well known for something and that is tall women clothing. The fashion world is too saturated to just "fit it" I want to stand out. So, please bear with me as I change the website by adding wholesale and other things.
