Balancing Work and Life
Life can get the best of us at times and we often feel like there aren't enough hours in a day to get everything we want done. It's important that we keep a good work-life balance not only to keep stress off us, but it also affects our family. I work from home so it's kind of a struggle at times for me to balance work and life because my work is literally in arms reach! Here are some tips that I utilize to keep a good work-life balance:
Manage Your Time
You must act on your priorities. Get a calendar and jot down your top priorities for the week whether its exercise, family time, a big project that's due at work, a dinner date with your spouse or significant other and so forth. Again, I know you may think it's not enough hours in a day but maybe you could get up earlier than you normally do and get somethings done while everyone else in the house is still asleep.
We also must let go of being perfect. As you climb the career ladder and your family starts to grow perfection is out of reach. Just take everything day by day. Prioritize and get what you can done, tomorrow is a new day!
Taking Time for You
This is something I struggle with personally. I'm usually in the house all day either working on my website and marketing, drafting patterns or sewing. So, I don't get outdoors a lot. Also, my 3-year-old is home with me during the day as well so I'm not only doing work I'm tending to her as well. When I do have some free time, I feel like I should be following up on emails or updating something on my website. I'm sure you may feel the same way when you get a little free time.
To help reduce our stress level we must take some time out for ourselves. Whether it's exercising, a yoga class, treating yourself to ice cream or getting a manicure and pedicure. This month my goal is to join a yoga class where I can go to each week and be around other people and relax! Also, remember just because you have a few free hours on a Wednesday evening doesn't mean you have to say 'yes' to your co-workers if they invite you out for drinks. Take that time out for YOU and enjoy yourself.
Having a Social Life
Plan at least one activity during the weekday that way you can head into work week with something to look forward to and have a way to get through the entire work week and not feel the stress that comes with it. May be something like a networking event because that has a work and play feel. Get to know some new people. I really enjoy going to networking events because you never know who you will meet and what you may have in common. I'm an introvert so this really helps me to step out of my comfort zone. You can even schedule recurring social activities like a monthly book club, by having regular activities like this written into your calendar, you'll be able to plan around them.
Once my oldest daughter gets on the bus for school my work day begins and when she gets off the bus at 4 PM that's when my workday ends (majority of the time). I get as much work done as I can while she’s at school because when she gets off the bus her and the 3-year-old go crazy lol! It's time for homework, play time, dinner, bath, snacks, prepping lunch for tomorrow and getting school clothes out, and then bed. After all of that I'm tired! So, as you can see I wouldn't get much work done when my daughter gets home from school because our house gets so hectic during the evening. My husband also helps a lot as well so if there is something major that I need to get done he will keep the girls occupied so I can finish my project.
It's the same if you work outside the house get as much work done as you can in the 8 or more hours you may work. Once you have completed your day at work leave it there. Don't bring work issues home and just enjoy time with family or yourself.
Enjoying Weekends and Vacations
One thing that I truly believe in is enjoying your weekend! Some people do chores on the weekend and they may enjoy that, but I don't lol. I rather clean up throughout the week or even better my husband and I will make a list of what needs to get done around the house and we both do chores throughout the week, so we can enjoy our weekend; we also get our oldest daughter to help out as well. So, if you prioritize your week and set out what’s important and what needs to get done then you will know how your weekends will be; will you have a free weekend to relax or will you have a weekend that's full? It all depends on how you prioritize but enjoy your weekends!
Mother's Day weekend is coming up and I'm headed to the beach with my family. a mini vacation that is much needed. With the business mindset I have I honestly feel like the vacation can wait but I know this is a priority and I have to relax and just enjoy myself and not think about work. Have some time away from electronics as well. I know we often check our phones for social media and emails but that can wait. We have to enjoy life in order to become stress free and to keep a balanced work- life atmosphere.
Making Time for Family
The good thing about me working from home is I can be more flexible when it comes to family time. My husband he works outside the home, so he usually goes to work and go straight to the gym after he gets off and doesn't get home till around 6:30-7 PM. Our weekdays are hectic so every Wednesday we have family night. We watch movies, eat junk food, and play board games with the kids. That's our time to bond and just have fun.
You can do the same. Pick a day out the week or days; whether it's eating dinner together or watching a family movie. Do something together. Our kids look forward to EVERY Wednesday because they know it’s full of fun and love. If your weekends are open, make some time for family as well.
So that's just a few tips that I go by just to balance work and life. It may look hard but when you actually sit down and plan things out it becomes a lot easier. You will thank yourself in the long run. Comment below and tell me some way you can better balance work and life? I'd love to hear from you!
